Victorian Prison Chapel, Lincoln Castle, Lincoln
Within the walls of Lincoln Castle can be found a Victorian prison complete with an unusual chapel. In the mid-nineteenth century, prisoners were kept under the "separate system" and denied all contact with each other, using solitary cells, a rule of silence and hoods. The system was condemned as cruel and lasted only a short time but the prison chapel survives as a remarkable example of how the system operated. The pews were specially designed to allow the prisoners to see the chaplain in his pulpit without seeing each other. Each prisoner stood, or sat, in a wooden compartment which was locked before another prisoner was admitted. Condemned criminals sat at the back, women at the front and debtors to the side.

This is part of my family (mom's side) that was in England during late Victorian times. The move to America happened around the turn of the century, AS FAR AS I KNOW (I'm so shaky on clear facts).
On the back of the picture it reads:
"My Dear Richard this is C.A. and her little family. The tallest little girl is called Tilly and the next to her is called Janis and the other little one is called Catherine she is very delicate and that is the Old Boy sitting on C.A. lap he is a fine old Romp he is called Robert don't you think they are looking fine good bye XXX"
Yes, the "Old Boy" is wearing a dress. Ah, back in the days when they used to dress little boys like girls.
